We’ll also discuss how these beds look in real homes and whether I think they’re worth buying. Now that I’ve had mine and used it daily for over two years in the guest bedroom of our current home, I have a pretty strong opinion and can write an honest review about my experience.
Why the Tilly Upholstered Bed?
When I was shopping for a new bed frame for the guest bedroom in our home, I knew I wanted to go for the upholstered look. It’s the most classic, grandmillennial forward style bed frame I’d seen. I quickly realized the price can really vary when searching for upholstered beds.
I wanted a light and airy, dreamy bedroom but didn’t want to spend thousands and thousands trying to design the perfect bedroom space. The Tilly bed seemed like a great middle ground and I loved that the clean, simple style allowed me to decorate in other ways throughout the room.
Are Padded Headboards Still in Style?
Yes! In fact, with the growing popularity of grandmillennial home decor upholstered aka padded headboards are all the rage with a platform bed. They’re a classic, functional style that is truly timeless.
You’ve probably seen them in a variety of different home styles and amongst popular interior designer accounts. They are definitely a part of current day design!
Do Upholstered Beds Need a Boxspring?
It really just depends. Some upholstered beds have slats and enough support that a boxspring isn’t necessary.
The Tilly bed DOES require a box spring to support your mattress. In addition, this is not included in the price and would be an additional cost.
Can I Use My Adjustable Base?
The Wayfair website reads as follows “Not recommend adjustable bases with any wing-backed headboard as the movement can cause friction between the mattress and wings and potentially damage the fabric and the motor.”
However, some reviewers left notes in the comments that they tried it anyway and it worked. So, I’d say test it if you want, but just know it is not recommended.
The product has upholstered side rails and can be mounted to most standard metal bed frames.
What are the Disadvantages of an Upholstered Headboard?
Because an upholstered headboard is fabric, it might be more difficult to clean than traditional headboards made of metal or a wood bed. Using a fabric cleaner and vacuum cleaner regularly if you notice spills or stains can help maintain your upholstered headboard.
Fabric Choice Options
When you have over 30 options to choose from, it can be hard to make a decision! But, the large assortment of fabric color choices you have is a huge perk. You’re almost guaranteed to find something you love!
If you’re familiar with Serena & Lily’s performance fabric line, you already have high standards. Unfortunately, the Tilly bed doesn’t offer anything like that to prevent stains, water absorption, and the like chances are if they did, the Tilly bed wouldn’t be an affordable option anymore.
I selected the fabric color Zuma White for a simple headboard. I requested samples of three shades and tested the options before landing on the winner. I highly suggest doing this!
What are the Pros of the Tilly Bed?
I’m going to list the price as both a pro and a con. It is more of a mid-range option than a budget-friendly option. Depending on how much you were hoping to spend, this could be a positive or a negative. It’s a lot more affordable than some of the other upholstered bed frames out there, though.
The tall headboard is also a perk. While some headboards get lost in the shuffle once you start decorating with a bedspread and throw pillows, the Tilly does not. You can still see the beautiful upholstered fabric even with all the decor since it is a fairly tall headboard.
A huge pro is that you can order free samples of the fabric swatches. I have a few and have included a photo below so you can see what you will receive as a sample. This is SO helpful in determining if the color will work with your space before making the purchase.
With different computer monitors and screens, it is super easy to have color misperceptions. Seeing the shades in real life is amazing!
What I love the most about it though is that it can go with any style so if you switch up your decor, rug, other furniture in the room, etc. the bed will still work regardless of how you implement new colors or textures into your bedroom furniture or decor.
Ultimately, it really is a great value for the price – it seems to be well made and like it is built to last a lifetime for a wingback bed.
What are the Cons of the Tilly Bed?
A con could be the price. Again, it is more of a mid-range price points option than a budget-friendly option. There are a few similar looks for less out there like this one & this one if your budget is under $1,000 and you’re on the hunt for more affordable beds.
It is also a bit more difficult to clean than an alternative bed as I previously mentioned. Since it is fabric, it will absorb liquids more easily. I haven’t found it to be too big an issue as liquids don’t come into contact with it much and I’m not prone to spilling things near my bed, but it is something to note.
The headboard doesn’t go all the way to the floor, either. You can see in this photo below how it stops slightly above the mattress. However, after you layer throw pillows you can not even tell! This is done obviously to cut down on the cost (more fabric equals more dollars) so I appreciate the way they did this to help us achieve the luxury look for less.
Finally, you do have to assemble the Tilly bed at home yourself. While it’s not a massive undertaking, it would be smart to have two people and at least an hour to knock this task out.

Final Thoughts
Ultimately, I’ve loved having the Tilly bed and can see myself using it for several more years. It’s a bit of an investment up front but one I think pays off. After two years of normal use, I can honestly say I don’t see any seam separation or signs of wear.
It’s easy to style with other furniture and decor and is a sleek and stylish addition to your bedroom. Regardless of where you end up purchasing your upholstered Joss & Main Tilly bed, I’m sure you’ll love it just as much as I do!
