Are you considering purchasing a washable rug for your home? I was so excited to try my first Ruggable rug a few months ago.
I’ve read mixed reviews over the last couple of years, and with so many opinions online, I really wanted to share my real, honest experience after actually living with one in my home.
We redid our floors a few years ago, and I ended up selling my living room rug, but I never got around to replacing it.

So, when Ruggable reached out and asked if I wanted to try one, I immediately knew I had the perfect spot for it.
Two of their newer collaborations really caught my eye: Mrs. Alice and Gray Malin. I love coastal blues and grandmillennial style patterns, and their designs fit my style.
They also have neutral options, so whether your home is colorful or more minimal, there’s truly something for everyone.
My Experience Selecting the Perfect Ruggable Rug for Me
I ended up choosing the Gray Malin Palm Beach Powder Blue Flatwoven rug with the cushioned pad.
I highly recommend measuring before ordering because I was between two sizes. Returning a large rug is not something you want to deal with if you can avoid it.
I ordered the 8×10, and it fits perfectly under our sectional!
Since this was my first experience with Ruggable, I went in with an open mind to test how it looks, feels, and holds up in everyday life.
Below, I’m sharing exactly what I think, the good, the not-so-good, and whether I’d actually buy another one or not!
Are Ruggable Rugs Any Good? I Was Determined to Find Out!
I’ll be honest, I didn’t automatically assume I would love Ruggable.
I’ve seen a lot of mixed opinions from other Ruggable owners, and after reading reviews over the last couple of years, I really wanted to form my own opinion.
The main reason I was interested was the idea of a washable rug.
With a dog and real-life messes, traditional rugs don’t make sense for us. That’s part of the reason why I never replaced our living room rug initially!
Once we put it down, I was genuinely impressed. It looks like a regular rug, not a flimsy “washable” one, and it instantly made the room feel more finished. But, how does it actually hold up?
Our living room is definitely one of our high-traffic areas, and so far, it has held up really well.
No shifting, no bunching, and no weird wear spots, which was something I was worried about.
So are Ruggable rugs actually any good? From my personal experience, yes. Mine has been a practical but pretty option for everyday life.
What’s So Special About Ruggable Rugs?
The biggest difference between ordinary rugs and Ruggable rugs is that they are washable!
The original Ruggable comes with a two-piece system – a separate rug pad and the rug topper, making the topper much easier to wash.
I chose the cushioned rug pad instead of the standard rug pad because I wanted more comfort underfoot. It still lies flat and doesn’t move around, which is a must for busy areas.
I also love that you can swap out the Ruggable rug cover for a different style without having to replace the entire rug. It’s an easy way to refresh a space.
Do These Rugs Actually Fit in the Washing Machine?
This depends on the size of the rug and the size of your washer.
Here’s a slight con to Ruggable rugs for areas like living rooms or dining rooms. While smaller sizes or a Ruggable runner will fit in most home machines, larger rugs may need a laundromat.
Based on the size of mine, if I do need to wash this rug entirely, I’ll have to take it to a laundromat.
It’s still way easier than dealing with natural fibers that can’t be washed at all.
If you can wash at home, use cold water, mild detergent, and a gentle or delicate cycle.
The corners in the two-piece system are oversized, allowing for shrinkage, so the rug fits perfectly over the pad.
How to Clean Ruggable Rugs
One thing I have noticed about the pattern I chose is that the cream color on the outside looks a little dirty in some spots.
It has been very easy to clean and vacuum, though, to keep it looking fresh. Dirt and stains wipe right up, and dog hair and lint are easy to spot, especially if you have a vacuum with a light on it.
For any dirt or stains, I use Folex with no issues.
Can You Use a Roomba on Ruggable Rugs?
You can, but I’d be cautious. I used a robot vacuum and noticed some discoloration along the edge.
That could have been user error, but now I prefer using my regular vacuum.
Deciding Between the Flatwoven vs. Tufted-All-In-One
Ruggable now offers the original two-piece rug system and a new all-in-one option.
The flatwoven (two-piece system) is thinner with a lower pile height, while the tufted style has a thicker, more plush pile but doesn’t have the ease of removing the top layer.
The tufted version feels more like a plush rug, while the flat-woven style works better under heavy furniture (like under a dining room table) and is great if you think you’ll be cleaning the rug often.
For living rooms or dining rooms, I think the flatwoven option makes more sense.
In general, the tufted all-in-one design is recommended for smaller-sized rugs, and the flatwoven works best for larger rugs.
Will It Hurt Anything to Put Ruggable Rugs Outside?
Ruggable has a nice selection of outdoor rugs specifically for patios and porches.
I wouldn’t put an indoor rug outside, but their outdoor collection is designed to handle moisture and wear!
I’m actually eyeing one for our back patio because I love the idea of being able to hose it off.
Would I Buy Another Ruggable Rug?
Yes, I would. I’d love one for the laundry room or even the kitchen near the kitchen sink, where messes happen daily.
Being able to swap styles, wash when needed, and not stress about stains is huge for me. It’s truly a great rug to have!

For me, this has been a great first Ruggable rug experience, and I can honestly say I would buy another one!
